June Calendar Buzzes with Fun

Mother used to say that only the boring need ever be bored. In some small towns, the growing of grass is an event. But not here.

If we listed all of Telluride's summer events, this newsletter would turn into a novel.
Here’s just a sample of what’s coming up in June:

6/5 - 8    Jazz Celebration
The Neville Brothers, Les McCann and Javon Jackson, and other jazz greats.

6/5 - 15   Musicfest
Enjoy chamber music in private homes.

6/6 – 8   Balloon Rally
Come take a ride at sunrise in Town Park.

6/9 - 14 Wild West Fest
The spirit of the West on stage at the Sheridan Opera House.

6/19 - 22  Bluegrass Festival

Artists include Sam Bush Band, Ricky Skaggs, Bruce Hornsby, Ani DiFranco, and Yonder Mountain String Band.

6/22 - 28    Bike Week
Events include trail maintenance, group rides, Bike to Work Day, Lizard Head Pass Hill Climb, and an auction.

6/26 – 29  Wine Festival
A weekend of wine tastings, winemakers, sommeliers, and food pairings.

6/29 – 7/5  Plein-Air Festival
Landscape artists paint in the great outdoors. Their work is then exhibited and auctioned as a fundraiser for the Sheridan Arts Foundation.

New Lift Under Construction

They said it couldn’t be done.
Well, OK, maybe they didn’t say it couldn’t be done, but probably most people didn’t think that Telluride Ski and Golf would add a new lift for the 2008-2009 season. Together with the opening of Black Iron Bowl, Palmyra Peak and Chutes 6-10 last season, this expansion adds nearly 400 acres to Telluride's ski area!

Preliminary construction has  begun on a new quad chairlift called “Revelation.” It will expand terrain into the Revelation Bowl, facing northeast on Gold Hill.

Why, you may ask, are we talking about ski slopes right now? It’s summertime, and the livin’ is easy. Yes, but some people (no names will be mentioned) who are attracted to Telluride, are quite fond of skiing, and like to think of all the places they will go when it snows.

Construction on the new lift is scheduled to be complete by November 15, 2008, in time for the 2008 / 2009 ski season.

The Revelation Bowl has been called “the perfect powder bowl,” since wind transport typically adds to fresh snowfall there.  The new lift will also provide easy access to Chutes 6 – 10, which lead to the Palmyra Basin. An access gate near the top of the lift will give advanced adventurers freedom to explore backcountry skiing in Bear Creek. For those of you already dreaming of ski season, more complete information can be found at:   http://blog.tellurideskiresort.com/blogs/davesblog/default.aspx

Spring Warms the Market

Ah, spring. It’s when robins build nests, and people think about new places to live. The cold winter months tend to slow down real estate market activity in many areas. Who wants to look for a home when there’s snow in the mountains? If we pack, we pack suitcases with swimsuits. Otherwise, we work and we ski.

After a slow first quarter, the spring real estate market in Telluride is now warming up. According to numbers from the Telluride Association of Realtors, April sales totals of over $58 million were on par with April numbers in previous years, with the exception of last year’s all-time record of $77 million.  And property values are holding steady in our valley, a sign of Telluride's continued strength in the face of an uncertain national economy.

As of now, interest rates are low and it’s still a buyer's market, but that won't last for long. Telluride properties have a history of appreciating in value faster than the national average, making real estate in this town a smart investment.  There are still some bargains to be had here, but as our summer visitors start to arrive and our market heats up, those will melt away along with the last of our snow.
